Adding color to the decorative grains in guitar woods...?
When it comes to guitars, will dyes bring out the figure in the wood more dramatically than colored laquers?
For example, think of the Highly Figured Quilted Maple or Curly Maple you see on custom guitars. Any useful and relavant information is welcome. Thank You.
If it makes a difference in your advice, I should clarify that I intend to purchase some highly figured quilted maple wood ,dye it a deep emerald green then spray with nitro cellulose laqcuer clear coat.
There is a new technique that we have been testing that uses both a dye and a colored lacquer topcoat.
For emerald green, first you would sand the body to 600 grit and quickly apply and remove black wood dye making sure to apply it evenly. Let the dye dry and scuff it up with 000 non metallic wool, again watching to keep an even color... at this point the black should remain only in the "loose" parts of the wood. Apply the tinted lacquer, then the clear, and you are ready to go
