Growing maitake (hen of the woods) mushrooms?
I've got a pack of 100 maitake mushroom plugs. I understand they are best grown on freshly cut hardwood stumps. The thing is I have freshly cut pine stumps and I have some old (1 yr.) oak stumps. Ive heard that it's less critical to start maitake on fresh stumps but still is very beneficial. So I was wondering which of these options (fresh pine or old oak) would be better, or will neither work?
And also, how many plugs should be put into a 2 X 1 stump?

Use the oak stumps.
About the only commonly cultivated mushrooms that do well on pine and firs are Pleurotus pulmonarius: The Phoenix Fir Oyster and Laetiporus conifericola: Chicken of the Woods
I'd use about 20-30 plugs, half on the cut face and the rest around the base at the soil surface interface where most of the fruiting will occur.
